Frequently Asked Questions
What is Sous Vide?
Sous vide is a modern technique that top chefs use. Food is placed in a plastic bags and cooked in a water bath to a precise temperature. Cinder takes that core ability to control temperature and places it into a more familiar and approachable form factor, the countertop electric grill.
How is Cinder faster than sous vide?
Cinder starts cooking almost immediately because there is no bath of water to preheat. And because Cinder knows right when your food is done, you don’t need to add extra time just to be sure.
How easy is it to cook with the app?
Using the app you can tell Cinder what you are cooking and what results you want, and Cinder breaks that into a time and temperature profile. It monitors the cooking process to adjust to your exact food, and can even pause or hold your food at various points in the process.
What can Cinder cook?
Cinder can cook anything that can contact enough of the cooking surface and stay on a flat surface. Flat steaks are a perfect example, and bone-in steaks will also work. For chicken breast or fish, the top surface tilts to make better contact. Using Cinder as a griddle, you can fry eggs. And more uses become apparent the more comfortable you get with Cinder.
How does Cinder know how long to cook my food?
The main determinant for understanding doneness is food thickness. Cinder uses a built-in sensor to automatically measure your food and calculate an initial estimate. Then for greater precision, Cinder monitors several parameters during actual cooking to determine just when your food is done.
Will Cinder work with my phone?
The Cinder iOS app will be available for free download at the time of shipping, and an Android version is coming soon. iOS devices supported: iPhone 5, 5s, 6, 6s, 6S+ running iOS 9.0 or later
What if I don't have an iOS device?
Cinder is perfectly capable of running manually. Instead of setting the temperature from the app, all you have to do is turn the knob to the target; Cinder will still be able to track your food as it cooks and knows when it's done.
How long can I leave my food?
Most meats, including Beef or chicken can hold for around 2 hours with no loss in quality. You can even do this with fish!
